Formerly Caledonian Life, the company was acquired by Royal London Group in 2011 and rebranded Royal London in 2014. Caledonian Life was set up in January 2001 building on the foundations of the Caledonian Insurance Company and Guardian Life selling insurance products through brokers.

UK-regulated Royal London has been selling insurance and investment products in Ireland using EU passporting rules. The insurer, which has had operations in Ireland stretching back to 1854, has said it will use its Irish operations as its post-Brexit EU-base and is in discussions with the Central Bank of Ireland with a view to establishing an Irish-regulated entity to continue operating an EU business.
