Arnold Schilder

Arnold Schilder (1948) is as of 1 July 1998 Executive Director at De Nederlandsche Bank NV (DNB) in charge of prudential supervision on financial institutions. He is a member of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) and a member of the Committee of European Banking Supervisors (CEBS). From 1999-2006, he served as Chairman of the BCBS Accounting Task Force.

Furthermore, he is Chairman of the European Interim Working Committee on Financial Conglomerates (IWCFC) and also is a member of the Public Interest Oversight Board (PIOB).

He holds a post as part time Professor of Auditing at the University of Amsterdam since 1991; from 1988-1998 he served in a similar position at the University of Maastricht. He is chairman of the Advisory Board of the Master of Compliance Education Program at the Free University, Amsterdam. In 1994 and 1995 he was chairman of the Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut van Registeraccountants NIVRA (professional organization of chartered accountants). Under his chairmanship, NIVRA was awarded the title ‘Royal’ at the occasion of its 100th anniversary. Arnold led the process which resulted in a full harmonization of the Codes of Ethics of NIVRA and the second tier body NOVAA, including standards for quality control and peer review. As NIVRA’s chairman, Arnold was also a Board member of IFAC.

He also served as a member of the tripartite Dutch Council for Annual Reporting from 1996-1998. Until 30 June 1998, he was a senior international audit-partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, serving clients such as Unilever, Reed Elsevier, Océ and Buhrmann. Earlier, he was involved in services rendered to the small and medium-sized business sector. His consultancy work included boardroom consultancy, arbitration, mergers and takeovers, restructuring, and technical auditing and accounting issues.

Professor Schilder has published on accounting and auditing, professional ethics, corporate governance and financial reporting.

He studied theology (major subject: ethics) at the University of Utrecht (graduating in 1974) and accountancy (graduating as Registeraccountant in 1980). He obtained a PhD in economics at the University of Groningen in 1994. He received the Sinnighe Damsté Award and the Alfred Coini Award for some of his publications.

He has been decorated Knight of the Order of Oranje Nassau (2001). Arnold and his wife Eefke have three children and three grandchildren.
