Grant Thornton Ireland has over 2,800 staff, and was the fifth largest accountancy firm in Ireland, recording a fee income of €276 million in the 2024 Finance Dublin, Accountancy Survey, showing year on year growth of 20%. The firm operates from offices in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Kildare, and Limerick. The Irish and US practices were merged effective from January 1st 2025 in a pioneering move for the worldwide Grant Thornton franchise. The firm is now part of a wider transatlantic platform, spanning five jurisdictions as of April 2025.
Effective from January 1st 2025, Grant Thornton in Ireland became part of a US-Ireland transatlantic business following the merger of the advisory and tax practices of Grant Thornton's US and Irish affiliates. In April 2025 (Wednesday 23rd April) Grant Thornton Advisers LLC and Grant Thornton in Ireland announced that they have expanded "the transatlantic platform they created earlier this year" by merging in three additional firms, Grant Thornton's UAE, Luxembourg and Cayman Islands practices.
The Ireland-US merger was the first since New Mountain Capital, alongside minority investors CDPQ and OA Private Capital, made a significant growth investment in Grant Thornton in the US in May 2024. New Mountain Capital managing director Andre Moura said the deal represents ‘a strong first step in bringing together two of the highest quality firms in the Grant Thornton network, under a unified structure’ and said the platform will pursue further M&A opportunities.
The ‘transformational’ merger created, in the words of Grant Thornton Ireland CEO Steve Tennant, ‘the first truly integrated US and Irish professional services firm’ and is ‘a key moment in shaping the future of professional services in a rapidly evolving global landscape.’ Grant Thornton’s audit businesses in Ireland and the United States continue to operate as independent partnerships.
