Tom Butler is Professor in Information Systems at University College Cork and Principal Investigator (Research Director) of the Government of Ireland's Financial Services Governance Risk and Compliance (GRC) Technology Centre. In his role as Principal Investigator of the GRC Technology Centre, he leads a multidisciplinary team from-University College Cork, National University of Ireland Galway, and University College Dublin. Research and development at the GRCTC focuses on the challenges facing the financial industry in the areas of regulatory compliance and risk, encompassing the FinTech, RegTech and RiskTech sectors and related domains, such as law. Here his research is on applying innovative digital technologies (based on semantic technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and risk data virtualisation) to address the problems of regulatory compliance and reporting in the financial industry.
