An Irish special purpose vehicle was at the centre of a debt-for-nature swap that has the dual benefit of providing fiscal savings for the Republic of Ecuador and funding for the conservation of the Amazon rainforest.
The winner of the Debt Capital Markets Debt for Nature Swap, International Deal of the Year is Amazon Conservation DAC. This transaction involved the issuing of conservation bonds that, through a ‘debt-for-nature’ swap, provides savings for the Republic of Ecuador and $460 million in funding for the Amazon Biocorridor Program and shows the important role global capital markets can play in supporting nature conservation efforts.
