The formation of SARA, Europe’s largest regional airline operator, demonstrates that not all consolidation in the world aviation need involve M&A activity. This joint venture seeks to create an added strength for its constituent parts, each retaining their own identity and focus.

The formation of the Strategic Alliance of Regional Airlines has created Europe’s largest regional airline operator. The new alliance is made up of nine independent companies based in Ireland, Spain and Denmark. These include three airlines, an aircraft maintenance company, a crew training centre, and four other companies dedicated to providing services to the aviation industry. The new SARA group will employ 2,500 staff.
